Was fishing the first gate in a big northeasterly swell and massive tide a few year back. Some bloke got washed about 100 yards down the pier from about 200 yards from the end, only thing stopped him going under the fence was his box

Has anybody actually ever been washed off Shields pier in living memory?
I overheard someone a few weeks back, telling a 'tourist' that someone had been washed off and never seen again in 1973.
True or false?![]()
Same thing happened to me about 6 years ago now. Had been fishing the blocks over low water and the flood, was a dying north easterly stayed probs an hour longer than i should of which meant getting past the post/rubble became a problem. Swell came over inside of pier near rubble area only about a foot and half deep but it took me straight off my feet and carried me about 50 yards down pier. To say i got a shock is an understatement. Luckily i escaped with just cuts on my hands. Lesson learned and I'm a lot more cautious now.
I've often wondered just how effective a flotation suit is in this sort of situation. I only really wear one to keep me warm/dry.
Has anyone on here ever gone into the sea wearing one and was it a life saver?
