reading the shields gazzette today front page a story about pumping water out of the old mine shafts from westoe and afew other mines from sunderland its going to be pumped into the sea off the wherry at whitburn a hope it brings the beaches bk to life with fish like wen the mines were open wats peoples views on this
 
If it brings the fish in I'm happy. My dad told me about a place up at seaham when it used to be black and used to get codling through the day etc with the water colour etc. Think it was the blast beach or something?
 
When the pits were going,it was mostly stone waste that was dumped on the beaches.The colour it made the water is what attracted the fish.
Any water pumped from old mine workings will have a lot of rust and chemicals
in it from all the steel and other things left down there.
No doubt this will have to be removed before its pumped into the sea.....

No doubt it should be removed however will it be removed!!!
 
According to the paper it will be getting pumped out untreated, similar sites at Dawdon and Horden are treated prior to being pumped out, why not here? Surely the old mine working consist of the same stuff?
And heres one to think about...would they still be allowed to do this if they found seagrass on the site?
 
Easington was the same, dad used to fish there in the 70s + 80s. Got some great 'fishing tales' about getting cod in bright daylight.. Sea was filthy from the mining waste tipped off the aerial flight.
 
this will be polluted water full of allsorts of chemicals, just like the Tyne years ago.
Out of sight out of mind just dump it at sea its nowhere near the bathing beaches so it will be fine! Some of the wording is typical of the big companies and city clowns
 
i@ all them coal fires on the beaches,when you left next angler would build fires up again,so some would burn 24hrs a day.them were the days.
 
if you watch the ending of the movie "get carter" you'll get an idea of what the sea was like when the pits were pumping out. I was lucky enough to experience what it was like , and can say the cod fishing was fantastic day or night.
 
we have the same thing in blyth they have been draining all the water from bates pit for a few years now. it goes in2 a top pond then fillterd down in2 another then another but the last pond is full of rushes & reeds that also fillter the water, it is now full of oxegen weeds then it is pumped in2 the river still a rust colour at the begining but clearing alot now.
it has'nt put the peelers off in our traps so must b doing some good.

I can remember when there was big arguments about switching the pumps off at a lake near Barnsley, they couldn't decide who should pay for the pumps. When they did switch them off, it was killing a skip load of bream a day, the original Angling Trust got involved and got them to switch the pumps back on until a mutual agreement was reached. The guy from the club, think it was Barnsley DAA, who controlled the water was in tears as he described it to the NFA meeting, asking for funding for the Angling Trusts efforts.
It's not the water it's the concentration of Toxins that leach out into the water?:(

Sure I remember seeing a program on telly about the Chemical companies, planting great Reed Beds in the Tees estuary with great effect....and I think the really worked ...any Boro lads that can confirm ??:yltype:

A few of us used to light a fire on some steel sheet or heavy mesh so we could drag it up and down the beach with the tide..:D
