Where to collect mussels?

I'm thinking of trying to collect some mussel for bait.

Can anyone suggest decent areas to try please?

I was thinking of North Shields, around the Middens/Knots flats area?

I'm not trying to "steal" anybodies "secrets" by the way, I'm just trying to make a bit of bait collection as simple as possible, rather than waste a load of time and more importantly; fuel, bumbling from place to place.;)

thanks in advance

Steve

There are mussels on the Middens Island but I've not been down there for a while sure I'm not sure of the size.

as davy said get down the middens on spring tides can get a bucket ful in 30 mins. next to the old wooden jetty on the right hand side. i like to go down on the biggest of tides and get right out so can get to the bigger ones

i have a load of mussel (in small food bags) in chest freezer, these are from the Middens, fill a bucket in no time at low water, bit of a pain to shell and the skin on your hands will hurt a bit but once you get going its quite therapeutic  and best of all .......its for nowt!!
