With a bit of bait left over from sunday's match, Steve & I decided to head down to the south end of Whitley beach yesterday morning to look for a plaice. It turned out to be a very murky morning and with the high pressure the tide had flown out - so instead of starting fishing at the Half Moons as we'd planned, we headed along the pipe to fish the corner skeers instead.

There was a fella already plugging on the end, without success, and Steve chucked out a bait & decided to try a bit of spinning, but to no avail. I haven't seen Whitley so scoured out in a long while; there was no sand at all along in front of the Rex - and it seemed that there were to be no plaice to be found either. No bites at all as the tide ebbed, but as soon as it turned I had a nice rattle which turned out to be a first for me from the Pipe - a wrasse about 35cm. Pretty soon after Steve, who by this time was fishing off the end (I'd also moved up there for the last of the flood) also got a wrasse the same size..

Lovely colours on them - patches of really iridescent green on the fins, which don't really show in the photos, and both went back happily. There was also a few lads fishing Crawleys, but I don't know if they had any success..

Anyway, with the tide now flooding hard, it was time to get off the Pipe and we headed back for the Half Moons where we managed one chuck before getting pushed off. So although we didn't get what we were looking for at least we both had a fish and a first for both of us with wrasse from the Pipe. Oh, and the auld fella who had been plugging away around the Old Pipe End while we were up the Pipe had no joy at all - hopefully he might have had better success this morning.
Cheers, Gary
