i fished the sluice comp last night , i got a small cod 9" and a coalie same size, one lad had a four pounder on the end of blyth pier, i was on the bend, the lads were good enough to give me some fish last night, when i gutted them all they were all empty nothing in there bellys. when i was a kid jan/feb were good months for cod, now i catch most of my cod in oct/nov/dec. can anyone tell me why the cod go missing in feb ??????????????

To conform with EU regulations ,the cod were made to bring their holidays
in line with the rest of the European species. Now fishyard fortnight starts
on February 4,then runs into their fortnights half term. There is a skeleton
cod staff for essential services,so you will always see the odd one,but
rest assured, they will be few and far between.:)

cod

good one ------------------ i was always led to believe cod like dark water thats why they come in at night and when the seas are coloured afta a east wind and the shrimps prawns ect are washed outa the sand also temperture. they are a cold water fish they come in when the water temp is low when i was diving i learned about thermoclimes in water deeper then 15 mt then temp only changes by a couple of degrees winter and summer thats why cod stay in deeper water in the summer plus they go where the food is cod also spawn in deeper water in early spring winter cod are full of roe

Don't know about that. We have resident fish on the North east coast that are are best fished for in bright, sunny, calm conditions during the heights of summer. I've also had fresh run fish from Whitburn beach in August during a big sea.

As for the original poster, I like February for size of fish, not necessarily numbers but I've had quite a few of my biggest fish in February.

Hate to go back to the old chestnut but all the time this bit sea's been running it's been a massive high pressure system over us. In winter high pressure = few fish.

had one 15lb back in 2009 local. that was late feburary

had one 14lb back in 2006 local. that was a very late fish. march 28th.

there was one by a local i know 13.5lb a couple of weeks ago at ryhope. i weighed it

yep. i deffo rate feb and march for the odd biggun. just got to put more hours in

Aye,he did indeed,as i witnessed him catch it.Good fish as well.I'd be
surprised if he reveals the location,as he said he did'nt want the place
swarming with tateys.
At least peoples petrol tanks were'nt being emptied between 7 and 12
last night!:D
