Seen a couple little boats fishing close to the end yesterday, must be after mackerel.
I have to agree with Kelpy and disagree with Lingking.
I never fish from the pier and I am a boat owner, so I should agree with what lingking says, but I think the sea is big enough if you have a boat.
No need to come close to the lads fishing from shore, river banks or pier head.
I once tangled a boys line into the back of my boat and felt very bad about it. I went onto the ground and caught a big cod...I went straight back and gave it to the lad...he was so pleased, I saw him having his photo taken with the cod on his arms.
60 yards is a canny distance though

Although it does look to me as if the boat is at anchor...how can that pull your rod in??
you obvisouly got common sense and considerate, good on you. unlike a few boat anglers who are with out a brain , i and several people i know have had several near misses over the years through inconsiderate boat owners, but as the lad said boats have right of way, and if boat pulls a rod in you have no claim
so when fishing places with boats coming and going you just gotta take extra care

No argument intended KeithB, just exercising my right to warn other anglers that regularly use the pier for pleasure and match angling about how a small pleasure craft nearly took my rod in, wouldn't they also have the right to say something if they were hit by an anglers 6oz weight being cast from the pier.
The Endeavour from Newbiggin decided it was fine to lift his pots from about 4-500 yards out then rebait them and drop his complete row of pots probably less than 40 yards in front of Anglers yesterday on the beacons in the Sluice open. No warning just steamed straight in, loads of swearing and utter contempt for the Anglers. About 5-6 Anglers had lines cut off and despite loads of shouting one lads rod was pulled across the rocks, luckily he managed to grab it before it dissapeared in the water.
Basically a row of pots 30-40 yards out and 400 yards long!
Talk about selfish!
Even if he had waited 30 seconds for lads to get their lines in it wouldn't have been so bad, but no he didn't give a damn, he thought it was funny and was quite aggressive with some of the guys who obviously took offence.

common sense needed on both sides really if i on a pier and a boat coming in i reel in but at same time . Boat knows they line out there why just steam towards it or ingore it
If my rod got pulled in no matter who has right of way !!!! i know for a fact i would be straight down to the mooring and probs would get arrested
but on boat owners side i have fished of midd pier in hartlepool and seen fisherman cast direct towards boats coming in

I mentioned in my catch report about the number of pots up at Usan and, fishing largely around low water, we bumped into most of the boats that had laid them. Most were lifted, baited and moved around, some within 30 yards of us. Every boat had a conversation with us, told us what they were doing and gave us time to pull in. Fair enough, some we knew from the pub but most were courteous strangers just getting on with their lives. Perhaps the fact that we were the only 2 anglers to be seen had something to do with it but in our few years in Angus we've always been treated with respect and, as a result, have responded similarly.
