greatest angler of our time ??

The Seaham club boasts, Jim Dobie, Paul Westmorland and Eddie Talbot, all good anglers along with local lad Gary Pye.

I knew him mate not in fishin terms although he was known throughout the plant as a top local angler, he worked the big vertical borer at George Angus, great bloke I thought with a different personality than most:D. Knew him since I started serving my time as a sparky in 76 until he left, must have been around 95 or so, can't remember exactly like. Happy days:)

The one I knew would have been well in his 70's now had he still been alive mate and the description about him hoying the 7lber behind him sounds just like him:D

Hope my memory doesn't let me down - I remember Barrawiska when I was in Tynemouth club in the 70's but I never knew his first name - he was just Barrawiska. He had an evil stare, for someone like me as a teenager, daring to stand so close to him in the Slatey or Harbour. Mind you that's how I remember most of the old guys. Bob Spellar (hope that's right) used to look at you as though you'd just unzipped his trousers and fondled his bits with your pilchard oil stained hands, if you dared to join him up the skeers. Never got to know any of the old brigade as equals as I moved away so early but I'm sure the comments accurately refect the true man.

Yer Barrawiska had that look but he used to like us in the maintenance department at work though as when his vertical borer konked out it always used to take us ages to get the thing going again, gave him plenty time reading the mirror like:D Rumour has it he was a wizard at doing rebores on car cylinder blocks, that's just a rumour mind:D When I get to work tomorrow I'm ganna check to see when he actually left George Angus & Co. Ltd. out of curiosity.

A few people have asked me if I knew him, fishing with Whitley as a junior in the late 70's and the seniors from '80 til '83 (before moving away) but I have to say I just can't place him - if anyone's got a photo they could put up I'd appreciate it as I'm sure I'd recognise him.

I must give a mention to the late Malcolm "Little Mac" MacDonald - I fished most of the Whitley club matches with him as a youngster; an absolute hoot and a mine of information & help. I think he still holds the Whitley Club heaviest shore caught fish (in club boundaries) with one of about 25lb from the Warriors a few years back, caught in an Open (Tynemouth I think).

Gary :)

Jack Melton from Suderland a think that was his name. Wash end corner of the south pier, into the harbour, jar of mussle, baggin up with massive coalies, Absolutely unbeatable. As a young un we were in awe of the man. Happy days

From South Shields, Tess Charlesworth, Terry Woods, From Whitburn Alan Chapman all very good hands probably still are.

Great post btw, some proper owld schoolers names croppin up. Would have been some comp with all these lads takin part.

i dont fish compertitions i dont catch big fish i dont catch the most fish.

when i put the wriggly worm on my grand sons hook or help lift the fish he has just court out of the water i think i would get his vote.
