A Hardy Victor beachcaster from about 1980 probably my most expensive rod lol. £88:00 would probably equate to quite a bit now

lol rod have come a long way now,like you say jim they were floppy sticks then but people used them and caught fish in the kelp and on the beaches

Aye I remember them Jim, they cost a fortune, like you said £88 in 1980 was 8 nights out with taxi's included

Lol Davy, 8 very canny nights out with taxi's included mate.
I also bought a Shakespeare Sigma Graphite just after that for £80:00 one of the best casting rods I have ever used. It was amazing especially as it was a three piece rod. When i moved house the end piece was damaged and I had it repaired losing about six inches. it still performed well but not quite as good. I would never part with that one either and still occasionally use it. Not nearly as sloppy as the Hardy though which has been hung up on the outhouse wall for years lol.
I might just try it again when I am able, just for a laugh lol.

diawa moonraker bought it second hand a few years ago first rod i ever bought probably worth a fiver now if that
My first decent rod was also a Daiwa Carbon Moonraker 12ft, bought from Temples 15 odd years ago cost £55 - I matched it up with a Shimano Aerlex GT8000 FPU also £55 (I'm sure it was a combo' reccommended by Sea Angler at the time too)...was still using the rod and reel up until last week 
...it's still in very good nick...Gregg even asked me if it was "new" LOLMy first ever rod was a DAM Fibreglass 12ft Beachaster type jobby...still got it, even though it's a complete pile

Slighty different to todays gear Red Rock
They still caught plenty of fish, YET, there were plenty of fish around in the seventies, not like the present time
yes just a bit,lol they were heavy but good casters made for pendulum casting at the time
as for more fish in the seventies yes and also in the 80s
