Nets off Tynemouth to Blyth

Remember the thread in january on this very subject?

Was wondering if they are still around?

The subject was discussed at length at the time and no one has said anything since. Does this mean the problem has gone...or just reduced...or is it still there just no one is saying anything?

I know the fisheries patrol changed their schedule as a direct result of that post so if nothing else it was a small victory for anglers here.

A lot of PM's went on in the background regarding that thread and hopefully it has had the desired result.

It would be nice to know that forum members helped to make a difference as I will be leaving anything to do with fisheries management as soon as I can get the letters of resignation in the post. I've decided I just want to get on and do more fishing.

Cheers
Dave

after the threats to myself and family members i reserved to post anything else on the subject.sad to here you are resigning dave you were one of the good guys who stood up for what we want.best of luck in fishing and whatever you choose.

Dave the nets weren't out for very long, I think the net lads were chomping at the bit to get them in the water following the ban last year. As it happens they weren't catching much fish and it became apparent that the seals were getting more fish out of the nets than the fisherman. As such the nets have mostly remained on the fish quay.
Thanks to you for putting you time and effort into the mix on behalf of us sea anglers.
Cheers
Marty

????????RESIGNING DAVE????????????????NO!!!!!!! You Can't m8.....Who will fight our corner?

And worst of all I'll miss your parrot at the other end of the blower doing wolf whistles at me!

Seriously Dave....You have probably....NO Definitely done more to get anglers up off their backsides, political and fighting for our rights, instead of moaning and doing nowt. Without people like you we are back to square one.

Dave, although we only had a short conversation last sunday, it was clear that you still have a passion for this fight, youve come a long way and although there is still a long way to go things are going in the right direction. Without people like yourself fighting our corner there wont be many fish left for you to enjoy catching!

nets back out today,
drove by and seen the white cat shooting nets,
thing is he has no danns as markers, they are small dull orange balls.
last nets shot ended in front of the boat station at whitley.
might be wrong but thought they had to have dannys on the nets,

There are no rules about how they mark there nets or pots as long as they have there identification number on .Only boats fully licensed can fish legally and there are no rules on how close they can come with the nets during the winter months north of the tyne

I have to agree that the rules regarding marking nets are very vague, but in theory are very strict.

This may sound like a contradiction but there are two types of fishermen out their ...."Hobby/part time" fishermen and licensed commercials...the rules differ for both, but I think there is also a third "agreed standard" where the fisheries protection guys deal with the same commercials day in and day out. They recognise individual sets of pots and nets so move on to those they dont.

The rules covering licensed pots and nets are quite strict and clearly defined..but they are flaunted which was brought up at the SFC meeting in July by a commercial fisherman sitting on the committee. The response of the Fisheries protection guys was to have a clamp down over the following three months which resulted in 100+ pots being lifted and confiscated. Most were subsequently reclaimed by their owners and obviously they got the standard verbal warning.

Hobby anglers are different. In theory I can take out my boat and drop 5 pots. As long as I have an empty milk carton on the end with my mobile number on it this would all be legal. In practice I would probably be commiting some breach of law regarding hazards to shipping but I haven't got that far into maritime law. I believe I could do the same with a net not exceeding 100 metres long ( I wouldn't by the way)

I have invited the SFC protection officers to give a presentation and answer questions at the meeting on 4th march for exactly this reason. How do we identify a pot or a net, legal or not. They are the guys who should be answering the questions. For example ...somewhere there is a list of boats/registration numbers thare are allowed to trawl within the 6 mile limit...so where is it?...cos I sure as hell dont know...so basically the average angler on the beach spotting what he believes to be something illegal has no chance of proving jack short.

This subject is touching on what has made me very disillutioned with the entire working of the inshore management of our shores. The people running it in that way have been doing so for the last 120 years but the proposed changes give us as anglers at least some chance of breaking up this old boys network that has been happily working hand in hand for over a century. Perhaps in the near future the inshore management will take into account the needs of all users of the sea and not just the commercial fishermen.

This was why I commented a few nights ago about resigning because I saw the current system as so set in stone and unchangeable that I was wasting my time. Since then I have had a rethink and realised it was a bad decision and a large part of that was the messages of support I have recieved from members of this forum. Thanks for that.

I occasionally ask stupid questions here...may set you thinking WTF is he smoking...but there is usually a valid reason for the question that may not be immediately obvious. Bear with me on these because trying to change something that has had 120 years to become a happy little club will not be quick and it wont be easy.

Cheers
Dave.
PS. I could add to that I am unlikely to be able to do it alone.;)

good on ya m8, we all raise our hats to you. its nice to know there are genuine good guys out there fighting our corner. on behalf of ALL shore anglers i shall take this opportunity to thank you, you are a true 'knight' of the sea. keep up the good work

Good to see you've had a change of heart Dave.....Tried that number you gave me after we spoke tonight but my mobile network were gonna charge me for connecting to an 0800 no! Any way who ever it was who was kleeking was down there for about 1-1 1/2hrs and must have been up to no good unless he/she eats 100 carrots a day or was wearing night vision goggles as I've never seen anyone stupid enough without a headlight to be that far down the rocks in the dark, especially with all the holes etc. There were two lights down digging (Sunday Night????). Only one car parked up which I took the number plate of, but am not sure if Clarke Kent was with the diggers or not.

Sorry to be a bit negative on that one Red5...but to be honest I find it hard to be concerned if a few lobsters go amiss as its not too high on my priority list.

You did highlight something that needs to change..the fact that there is no one to contact.

That 0800 number I gave you for the ea is charged at "your standard network rate".

I did check with the fisheries protection guys and got some intresting answers . The sea fisheries committee have no arrangement with the ea as far as that 0800 number is concerned.

BUT

If you ring it they do get the message..eventually

The recommendation is to use it because its all we have.

I was going to bring this up at the last meeting but it ran over by an hour while we sat and waited for someone to give a presentation that was listed under item 9 on the agenda...any other business was item ten and they would not go to that till item 9 was completed so we sat and waited...and waited..and waited.

The person doing the presentation arrived and launched into a stunningly enthralling presentation on the subject of...

Wait for it...

Well I had to for over an hour....

" The marking of fish produce on supermarket shelves"

I made my excuses and left ;)

I would point out here that attendance of these meeting is unpaid but to be honest i would have left, paid or not after seeing that subject matter.

"Contactability of the enforcement officers" will be on the agenda in April and not under "any other business"

Cheers
dave

See your point that lobsters aren't high on your priority Dave but I feel it's an important issue as I 'assume' this person was up to no good. (Bit like shoplifting really, It's only a couple of CD's they're nicking so it's not important....But really in the bigger picture of things it is.

Your point about contactability is the point. Who do I contact between 5pm Friday night and 9am Monday morning when someone is doing something wrong with our fisheries?

nets off tynemouth

That'll be why the South lads got nowt on the 16th Dazza....they must have been casting over the nets lol.

Sorry - a blatant gloat - you can have your very worthwhile thread back Dave - nice to meet you the other night.
