With just over a week to go before we head back to the UK I was itching to catch that flathead to add to my species list. This was to be my last chance so our daughter dropped Dorothy and I off at Davison Park,a lovely tidal creek. For bait we had squid and pilchards. Now when I fish head to head with Dorothy she normally catches more than me and this afternoon was to be no different.

I set up two spinning rods with running ledgers. Dorothy was to try squid and I was to try pilchards. I was praying for that flathead. Dorothy was first in with a tailor.

Now Dorothy is not keen on putting bait on and she certainly will not take them off the hook so I got the job of unhooking this fish. I had forgotten how sharp their teeth were and this one drew blood on me !!! Dorothy was next in again with another tailor followed by a bream. That was 2 new species for her. At this point I switched over to squid as the sardines were getting shredded as soon as they hit the bottom !!!!
That was me getting beaten 3 - 0 and Dorothy smirking lol To be honest she normally catches more than me - girl power. Woop woop eventually I managed to hook a tailor on squid, all fish being carefully retured.

Once I had broke my duck I picked up my lure rod and went casting for that flathead. I had been told that lures work well for flathead at this spot so I gave it a real good go. Roving up and down the bank and trying different lures. I never got one take.
I got chatting to an ozzie angler whose kids were catching small mullet in their nets. He said that he was going to livebait with them later for flathead. At this point Dorothy shouted over and I could see that there was a good bend in MY ROD !!!
Her bait had been picked clean so she thought she would check my bait on MY ROD. Guess what,a decent flathead had hooked itself on MY ROD and by the time I got there Dorothy had the fish at the waters edge. I put on some thick gloves and picked it out of the water. Another new species for Dorothy - well done. A quick photo and back it went.

Dorothy then picked up 2 more tailor and I picked up another tailor and foulhooked a bream. Final score Dorothy 6 John 3. At least I got unhook a flathead lol. You know what this means ------------ Yes I will have to come back on another trip and try to catch one.
Actually I am off on a fishing trip Thursday coming but this is in a freshwater lake fishing for bass. That will be something new for me. A report will follow from that one.
