The thing what I can't understand is WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT????.Why on earth wouldnt they just say items were sold out.Take them off display and put them aside for whoever they were for.would save the shop lots of chew.

can't believe any shop would do that, if the four customers didn't turn up for the item they would loose out, the mind boggles

It could just be one customer wanting them all.Dont get me wrong I could ring the couple of places I use local tell them what I want and they'd keep it till I had time to pop in and collect. But they would have the common sense to take it off display and just say out of stock will be back in at such and such a date to anyone walking in wanting same stuff. Not I've got some but you can't have any cos I'm keeping it for mick.lol

The shop in question was my shop Reelsport, i would not normally reply on open forum however just to put things into perspective here goes.

Here is a copy of a PM i sent to Mad-Mick which i have copied and pasted.

Hi Mad mick
I think the shop your referring to is Reelsport.
Just for the record there were not 4 to 5 spools of bait elastic on the shelf there were only two and yes i was keeping them for a customer who had phoned and asked for crab and did i have any bait elastic to which my answer was i had two left and he asked me to keep them for him along with the crab.
please tell me what is wrong with that, if it had been you who had asked then i would have kept them for you also.
regards
Terry

Yes in hindsight it would have been easier to take off shelf and say i had none but i didnt.

What am i supposed to do, if the customer had phoned up and asked for bait thread and i had said no i wont keep it for you, you will just have to hope i have some left when you get here.

Shop's done nowt wrong.no good buying crab if you've not got elastic,I would expect Terry to keep it for me and well done Terry for posting reply, shops are an easy target.

This isn't aimed at any specific shop but cant understand how any shop can ever be so low in bait elastic stock bit like a sweet shop saying running out of sweets? I am a professionally qualified buyer so perhaps have different mindset? In fact would be nice when people buying their crab over certain value shop could throw in a spool as a little gesture?

I'm sure all companies shops etc run out of some of there items at some point were only human mistakes happen or even could well be supplier lets you down.

I take on board your comment and won't start one of my training courses on stock control ha! Your comment is what is always said on students first day until we get stuck in! A shop will know typically know how many they sell year on year so..... no gonna shut up there. All I'm saying is its a shame a shop's reputation can be questioned over a bit of elastic worth pennies. Customer's perception is all there is the truth is irrelevant IMO. Cheers lads.

To be honest I wouldn't think any small buisness would know year on year what the amount they'd be selling as I reckon each year the internet is taking more and more buisness from them.

A full year if bait elastic to estimate
Haha have you got tomorrow's euro numbers please it's impossible to estimate as it's weather dependent ideal weather more bait elastic sold wrong conditions less sold.

Look lads I'm not wanting to get sucked into a load of stuff that will bore the pants off everyone about stock and but I can promise you that the point is being missed. Lottery numbers have nowt to do with it. In 2009 you sold 500 in 2010 you sold 550 and 2011 you sold 450 take an educated guess you could safely order 500 of which the cost in the overall scheme of things is nowt you've ordered once less paperwork, bank charges and less orders so less chance of something going wrong and you should get a better purchase price. The fact people ordering on line is they have stock and competitively priced. Also alot of the tackle shops supply online orders. There's also the risk of missed sales opportunity i.e. When i go for elastic i might pick up some other bits and pieces. Anyway wasn't going to go into it but will just finish off by saying if you order 50 more bits of elastic then it ain't never gonna get sold and hardly or shouldn't have a major effect on the cash flow of business. I'm trying to say to tackle shops who are in a cut throat environment they could help themselves more at times.

I don't think there are many small tackle shops that can afford the overheads of professional buyers and (even relatively simple) stock control systems mate. I reckon they have to fly by the seat of their pants just to stay afloat. I remember a factory I worked at and they sacked the old buyer with his books of business cards and brought in some suits with all their systems and buzzwords. Do I need to finish the story ?

smart me like, always have at least two reels of elacky in the bag. Yes, I know, expensive keeping stock in the tackle bag but haway it's fishing.:D
