Thats what I can't understand - anglers are saying they had to climb round the fence during and at the end of the match.
I find it incredible that the gate was locked during the match!
the pier is locked to the public because there is a lot of paint work going on
I feel the comity made the right choice, everyone knew it was an 8am start when the pier gates were to be opened. plus, it stops comp participents an early advantage over others who can't/wo'nt "camp out" for the best position on the pier.could a committee member please clarify a point for me
No fishing allowed where access to the public is denied, i understand that point,
the point i miss is
The pier gates were then locked, ( in your own words, open for comp but NOT to public) which then DENIES access to the public, so surely going by your rules anyone fishing the pier was out of bounds, as they were actually fishing where NO ACCESS TO THE PUBLIC wa\s allowed.
i am very intrigued to hear a response to this, so i imagine are many many others
i dare say that most of the controversy over this is due to the rules, an infringement of the rules, or something along those lines. Does anyone actually have a copy of the rules that applied to the open, these are given out when you purchase your tickets.
I think most people are saying that once the gate was locked it became out of bounds, Not actually having seen the rules myself this is going to be pure speculation and maybe someone can correct me if i am wrong.
I gather the tickets or rules stated no one to go onto the pier until the harbour master opened it at 8am BUT was there a time stated for when he would be locking the gate?
If the harbour master locked the gate at a certain time, anyone who came after that time and climbed around the gate was in effect tresspassing. I reach that conclusion by reading the letter from the port authority whereby they say the harbour master will be there to open the gate to bonafide anglers of the open, If he did not open the gate to allow access to certain people and they climbed around, he did NOT allow entry to those anglers and therefore LEGALLY they were tresspassing, so it could be read that by allowing them to fish, weigh in their catches, south shields club ( committee) are breaking their own rules and are actually condoning tresspass for certain people and not others. The mind boggles.
As for the public access, there were families, couples walking the pier the duration of the competition.

Lads, I can't help but think some lads have done everything they can to begin a witch hunt with this issue. A little common sense would not go a miss here instead of twisting every response. The rules stated if the gate was locked the pier was out of bounds, the lad accessed the pier when the gate was closed, therefore he was out of bounds. As a good will gesture the master agreed to open the gate at 8.00am,therefore granting open anglers permission to access the pier, the master had no option other than to lock the gate after the anglers had accessed, otherwise members of the public would then have access creating problems for the master. it just shows how a good will gesture can back fire, giving people the opportunity to abuse memebers and the club. It seems that there is no reasoning with these narrow minded people.
Just to put a slightly different twist on this issue. The pier is a favorite fishing mark of many anglers. The Pier has been closed for a few weeks now for maintenance work, to add fishing is banned from the south pier at all times. The shields club have to be commended on taking the time and effort to contact the master to ask for permission to fish on open day, this gave participants the added option of fishing the pier, they also put in place insurance to protect the anglers and the club. Lets face it the club could have taken the easy option to just class the pier as out of bounds. I hope this can help people see that the club was making every effort to give anglers every option to have an enjoyable days fishing.
I think some members who have commented on here are out of order in the way they have commented on the clubs action and the way the club reps have tried to reply. It would be perfectly understandable for a club rep not to comment any further as they will expect abuse. I can only think that some of the comments on here will just reduce the enjoyment of future opens, as the committee will tighten the rules greatly to protect themselves. Also 370 anglers fished the open, a handful of anglers have commented on here abusing the shields club and its committee, certainly not 370 anglers. how can somebody say 85% of anglers say the committee are in the wrong, I think the majority of anglers followed the rules and understand the committee were put in a very difficult position and respect there judgement. I wonder! how many of these people giving out abuse actually fished the open.
A round of applause.
round of applause for what ?
he has just written " if the gates are locked the pier is out of bounds"
that to me is playing into everyone hand who say the committee were wrong with their decision, hey but what do i know
Yes, but I'm talking about the weekends when there is no painting going on and long before that saga started.
It's just a technicality, the pier was opened just for the comp with the rule of an 8am start and 4pm finish. These piers are not dedicated to the public at any time, so in theory, there should never be any comps on any pier. I think common sense should provale.
you will have to take that one up with the port of tyne,i dont have a key
