Ok this is not a report from the north east but I have seen others on here that are not (Scotland, Norway etc) and if you don't want to read it you don't have to
I thought some of you might like to read about my fishing exploits down south over the last couple of weeks so here is Part 1. Part 2 (Chesil Beach Dorset) will follow when I get around to writing it and if you are interested in reading it?
Fowey is a small fishing town on the south of Cornwall and there is a bay called Readymoney Cove to it's west which was about ten minutes walk from our cottage and so perfect for chucking a line out. The bay is shallow close in but at the right hand side there is a point with a castle on the cliff above it called St Catherine's Point (see pic below). This is a well used local mark and there is deep water here. At low water you can make your way along the rocks at the side of the bay onto the point but at high water the rocks are covered and the point is cut off. Some of the locals scale the cliff to get on at high water and there is a rope hanging down to help but it's not my cup of tea. On the other side of the bay is a posh mansion where tv comedian Dawn French lives and which overlooks the point.
Two photographs taken from the point....
Serious looking pollack country.
The castle and the cliff which you have to climb to escape at high tide.
Sunday 20th May
I got down to the bay mid morning. It was a pleasant overcast day with no breeze and the water was totally flat. I started off about two thirds of the way along the rocks at the side of Readymoney bay (the water was still too high to be able to get onto the point without waders and I wasn't wearing any). Dawn French was sitting on her patio having a cup of tea in her dressing gown watching my struggles as I clambered along (probably thinking "look at that @rsehole over there"
) I caught four small pollack, some on a 28g dexter wedge and some on a 28g silver minnow spinner. The fish were nicely coloured from living amongst the kelp - a lovely dark red/brown with pale blue spots. All were returned to let them grow bigger. The water had dropped a bit more by now so I moved along to the end of the point now that there was access. There were plenty of fish about - lots of mackeral jumping out quite close in and I could see a large fish, not sure what (possibly a mullet?), cruising around right at my feet. A few more casts with the wedge landed me four mackeral then I decided to try a different tactic and fitted a 2oz weight with a running ledger and a strip of mackeral to fish on the bottom. Nothing was caught on the bait but it had been a fun session all the same. I headed back along the rocks before the tide got too high as I didn't fancy the climb up the cliff.
Monday 21st May
Had a short evening session off the ferry landing in the centre of the town (the Fowey-Mevagissy Ferry Landing) from the end of a small pool. The pool is a paddling pool for the kids which fills whith sea water when the tide is high then drains when the tide drops. The end of the pool juts out into the estuary where there is deep water just past a buoy. I was using two rods - one with bait (mackeral) and one with spinners. I fished from a couple of hours up to and half an hour past last light. I caught one nice little pollock on the spinner (see picture below) casting towards the middle of the estuary but nothing at all on the bait (tried various places close in and further out). I also managed to catch the buoy rope a couple of times and dragged the buoy towards me ten yards or so before my line snapped and I lost my spinner. Lol. Note to self - do not cast next to buoys
Wednesday 23rd May
Fished St Catherine's again, same time of day and tide as previous but this time it was bright sunshine and hot. Two rods - one using bait (mackeral, prawn and squid), one with spinners and jelly worms. Didn't catch anything but got a sunburn
A lad I spoke to who was coming off the point the day before hadn't had much luck either and that was bright sunshine too so it looks like the point fishes better when it's overcast (as do most places IMO).
To be continued .....
