Worms

When cleaning up yesterdays Whiting I noticed (as ever) they were riddled with worm in the gut which had also made it's way into the flesh...naturally they went straight in the bin...I kinda hoped they might be clean as they were miles out and hadn't been near the manky rivers yet - which I know is backwards logic a little

Anyone know why Whiting in particular seem subsceptible to gut worm? and do other species suffer it as badly or worse?

the rekon if gutted and cleaned asap they arnt that bad the longer left to clean the worse they get into the flesh but are still wormy fish anyway mackerel are the same

They are a bit offputting Tony, the way i get over it, is to only take a fillet from each side of a mackerel in one sweep from head to tail, cut the belly flap away, and put to one side, then check for the odd worm, if you miss one it get's cooked. Cut all the belly flaps into strips and freeze them for tipping off in the winter. With Whiting, try to learn the 'block filleting' method. that way you just take the flesh off the fish and leave the guts (and worms) on the backbone.but still check the edges and shoulders of the fillet, they are easily nicked out with the point of your knife As for cod, sometimes fresh run cod dont have any but as soon as they have been inshore feeding on the hard ground they get them. I'm surprised your fish have got time to catch worms, the way you and Norman pull them out lol.:D:D
