This is prob a stupid question that i should know the answer to, but what does the yellow can marker buoy off the lighthouse actually mark

dont really know mate all I know is your fishing over rough ground sometimes markers such as the yellow can indicate a pipe line or similar hazards:question:

straight ashore from the yellow buoyt is an old railway where minuitions where loaded and unloaded, bait diggers quite often dig up small bulletts and the odd mortar round, no doubt some where dumped just off shore.

Without trying to sabotage the thread....do you know Alan, if anyone ever fishes the railway hole these days? The old man dragged me along there a couple of times years ago, on spring tides to have a look and there are holes (literally holes) all the way out that must fish if you were trotting a line, but also a big hole at the end, although my recollection is that the end is a little indistinct these days.

many years ago, I was mooching around the back of st marys on a very low tide and found a hand grenade. it was just the pineapple bit so assumed it was just a casing.

stuck it in my pocket and took it home. thought I 'd give it a clean before taking it in the house - it appeared to be full of mud, so banged it on the wall to dislodge it all.....


out drops the detonator spring, cordite charge cap and a load of turquoise stuff I know know to be the main charge., looks like the top spring and clip retainer had rusted away, the rest was complete!

does the yellow can not mark the pipe end of an old discharge pipe??

Its a marker for the Navy. They use the area to blow up unexploded mines when they are found in nets etc (was once a common occurence).

David as far as I know nobody has fished the railway holes for years, used to be a great shot, bit dodgy to get there now.

thats a question that would be best asked of wor lass who was there at the time! I know in the cold light of days says, "see hand grenade - run away" but ah the impetuousness of youth!

It certainly makes sense that it is a marker for some kind of munitions purpose.

There are similar (if not identical) bouys marking the north and south outer limits of whitburn firing range. The area contained by the boys is clearly marker on the charts as a firing range.

Although I did wonder what those little icons meant on that section of sea ...untill northeast1 pointed it out....and as for those red flags...Baywatch?...no swimming?
