skate at crinan on the yaks

a trip up to crinan was on the cards, so when we got a weather window for friday and saturday decided to take the day off work
so me and ian left at at 4.00 in the morning and getting to crinan slip for 10
meeting our mate lozz who had drove from dover 11 hours :o
Off with the kayaks and paddled out to the mark 450 feet deep anchors down and set we sent the baits down on a 14/o hook 2lb lead on a wind on leader and the wait begins

baits were getting destroyed after about 20 minutes ,by them horrible little critters,dont know the name for them but there like little wood lice

after a few hours hit into a skate battle on and the gurning begins
putting a bend into the 50lb class rod to the test
his release lg reel was the dogs ,blew our tld20 and 30 two speeds away

and up came this beauty not bad for a first ever skate

probably about the 110 lb mark
then our mate lozz had a couple of biggies

putting his conoflex IGFA 50lb rated rod

in total we had 4 skate all about 110lb 180lb and 2 over the 200lb mark

not a bad first trip in my rtm abaco

Wow, what fabulous photo's. Looks tremendous being able to pull in such large fish from a yak. Iv'e just been getting a kayak myself, but hav'nt had a chance to use it yet.. Can't wait!
 
Might give it a go if I lived in Florida been in the north sea once in a wet suite for a hour kidneys ached for a month, but seriously well done that's some achievement

Joe, I wear a dry suit in the yak all year round with clothing underneath to suit water temperature ,this time of the year I wear a weezle onesy extreme undersuit ,warm as toast :)..........Dave.
 
That's good advice if anybody is going to buy a kayak they need to talk to you or your mates on clothing and safety gear remember the first time I saw a lone kayaker in luce bay he was stern on I thought it was someone in the water just about to blast over to him when he turned I could see the yak that was a few years back since the sport has grown you see plenty of yaks in fact the lads have fished the tope festival for a few years
